Summer is true low season: two queen rooms a block off Bourbon at $180 to $250, no cars needed, airboats, the Natchez, a brass band and a crawfish boil. Two real golf courses, 26 muggy days in July and $459 June fares from Detroit hold it back.

Where to stay

May is pricier (Jazz Fest and conventions) and the July 4 weekend is the one summer spike to avoid because Essence Fest fills the city. New Orleans and Company offers free hotel quotes for groups of 10 or more.

Golf

Thin but adequate for two rounds. Summer is dead season so five consecutive tee times are easy. Late May avoids TPC's June aeration.

Risks
  • Heat index 105 to 108 with storms most afternoons in July; 26 muggy days
  • Hurricane season from June 1 cancels airboats and charters on short notice
  • Essence Fest spike over the July 4 weekend
  • Rental rules force a hotel block; 10 rooms usually means a signed contract
  • Thin golf depth and June greens aeration at TPC
  • Detroit fare premium in June; Quarter safety at night means rideshares after midnight
Getting around

No rental car needed. Airport taxi is a $36 flat rate for two or $15 a head for three plus. Golf days are four or five Ubers to Avondale (25 to 35 minutes) or two minivans.
